Naughty Dog, formerly JAM Software in the 1980s, is an American video game developer and the creators of the Crash Bandicoot franchise. The company was founded by Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin. Naughty Dog is also known for creating the Jak & Daxter and Uncharted franchises.

History

In 1994, Gavin and Rubin presented the 3DO Interactive Multiplayer title Way of the Warrior to Mark Cerny of Universal Interactive Studios. Cerny was pleased with the game and signed Naughty Dog to make three additional games for Universal Interactive Studios.[citation needed] Rubin and Gavin decided to create a 3D action-platformer title. Because the camera would always look behind at the character's rear, the game was jokingly codenamed "Sonic's Ass Game".[1]

Development of the game began in 1994, during which Naughty Dog expanded its number of employees and invented a development tool called Game Oriented Assembly Lisp, to create the characters and gameplay. Cartoonists Charles Zembillas and Joe Pearson were recruited to create the characters, which resulted in the titular character Crash Bandicoot. After 14 months of development, the game was shown to Sony Computer Entertainment, who then signed on to publish the game. Crash Bandicoot was first shown to the public at E3 and went on to become one of the highest-selling titles for the PlayStation, selling over 6.8 million copies.[2]

Naughty Dog continued to develop two more Crash Bandicoot adventure games and a kart racing game, Crash Team Racing. At the time, Naughty Dog wanted to develop games for Sony without being constrained by Universal Interactive. Since Universal had the rights to the Crash Bandicoot series, Naughty Dog could no longer develop any more Crash Bandicoot games. To avoid a repeat, Sony bought out Naughty Dog, who had since focused on developing the Jak and Daxter series in the early 2000s.

In July 2014, Naughty Dog announced a fan art show to celebrate their 30th anniversary. In the contest, fans would draw characters from Naughty Dog's franchises, including Jak & Daxter, Uncharted, and The Last of Us. Naughty Dog even asked Activision to include Crash Bandicoot in the competition, but their request was denied.[3] The same month, when Naughty Dog was asked if their older franchises (including Crash Bandicoot) would have a reboot, they said that they had no immediate plans to return to their franchises but the possibility would not be ruled out.[4]

Games

Even though Naughty Dog created the Crash Bandicoot franchise, they only developed the first four original Crash Bandicoot games for PlayStation.
