Ripper Roo is a blue kangaroo who was mutated by Doctor Neo Cortex and zapped by the Evolvo Ray. Ripper Roo appears as a boss in several Crash Bandicoot games, starting with the first game, Crash Bandicoot. He has an insane personality and a distinctive maniacal laughter.

History

Crash Bandicoot

In Crash Bandicoot, Ripper Roo is the second boss, and his boss fight takes place at a waterfall.

In the epilogue, Ripper Roo is shown to have undergone intense therapy and eight years of higher education. During this, Ripper Roo developed a fondness for books, and managed to write a book that received critical acclaim.

Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back

In Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Ripper Roo appears as the first boss, and he is fought at the end of the first Warp Room. During his boss fight, Ripper Roo bounces around on his cane like a pogo sticks and plants TNT Crates within the tiles on the ground. Crash must avoid them and wait in the tile that Ripper Roo has not planted a TNT Crate. After the TNT Crates explode, Ripper Roo begins to plant Nitro Crates into nearly every tile. Crash must avoid them as well and wait for Ripper Roo to hit one of the Nitro Crates, which detonates on Ripper Roo and gives Crash a brief chance to attack by spinning into Ripper Roo. The battle cycle repeats two more times, so when Crash hits Ripper Roo a third time, he defeats the boss.

Crash Team Racing

In Crash Team Racing, Ripper Roo appears as the first boss, like in Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back. During his boss race, Ripper Roo constantly drops TNT Crates behind him as he drives along. In the epilogue, Ripper Roo is shown to have been elected a state governor, following a groundswell of public support.

In Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled's epilogue, Ripper Roo instead became a thrill ride engineer, but was blacklisted when it was discovered that he was designing rides only to test his pain threshold.

Crash Twinsanity

In Crash Twinsanity, just before Crash starts fighting Neo Cortex, Ripper Roo, along with Cortex's minions, show up for the fake birthday party that was planned by Neo Cortex. After Crash wins the battle, Ripper Roo is briefly shown discussing lunch with Dingodile.

Physical appearance

Ripper Roo is a blue kangaroo with crazed-looking eyes and razor-sharp toenails. His only article of clothing is a white straitjacket. As a bibliophile, Ripper Roo sports a top hat, glasses, a bowtie, and a walking cane. He is also capable of growing blonde hair, growing a full head of hair and a blonde mustache.

Personality

As a result of being overexposed to the Evolvo Ray, Ripper Roo is demented and hopping mad. He does not speak and instead giggles maniacally. In Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Roo has become somewhat of a biblophile, with a numerous amount of books found in his lair during the boss battle against him. In this state, he uses his cane to move around rather than his own feet. It usually takes a large explosion to revert Ripper Roo to his old, maniacal state.

Trivia

  • Ripper Roo was created by Naughty Dog to show the dangers of the Cortex Vortex in a humorous way. He also provided an opportunity for the animators to use overlapping action.[1] In Crash Bandicoot and Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, Ripper Roo's voice consists of sound clips of the hyena's laughter in Disney's 1955 film, Lady and the Tramp.
