The Nitro Squad is a group of characters that appear in Crash Team Racing and its remake, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled. The group is formed by Ami, Liz, Isabella, and Megumi, with Tawna Bandicoot being associated with, but not a part of, the group in Nitro-Fueled.[note 1]
The Nitro Squad first appears, with no official name, in Crash Team Racing as non-playable characters in the game, being motorsports models present at award ceremonies often seen whenever a player gets a trophy; Thomas Wilson, the creative director of Nitro-Fueled, mentions in an official Activision blog entry for the game that these characters used to be called the Trophy Girls,[1] with this being a term that had never appeared in official Crash Bandicoot media. The Nitro Squad name was created for the group in Nitro-Fueled; the name is derived from Nitro-Fueled's "Nitro" theme, which references the Nitro Crates seen throughout the Crash Bandicoot series as well as nitrous oxide.
In Nitro-Fueled, the members of the group are stated to be from different parts of the world each,[2] with Ami, Liz, Isabella, and Megumi being suggested to be from the United States of America, United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan respectively;[3] this is likely due to the namesakes of the former characters, and to tie with the theme of the Nitro Tour Grand Prix, the in-game event for Nitro-Fueled during which the characters first became available to play as, being based on internationality.
Notes
- ↑ Even though the Nitro Squad is always shown with her, Tawna is mentioned separately from the Nitro Squad in official Activision blog entries for Nitro-Fueled, with the Nitro Squad likewise only being mentioned to be composed by Ami, Liz, Isabella, and Megumi.
