The Nitro Squad is a group of characters from previous Crash Bandicoot games that first appears in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, a remake of Crash Team Racing, following the game update containing the Nitro Tour Grand Prix. The group is formed by Tawna Bandicoot, Ami, Liz, Isabella, and Megumi; female anthropomorphic bandicoots of different nationalities. Due to the Nitro Squad as a group first appearing in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, a racing game, each member is described to be a proficient motorsport racer in the game, because of which every member has a racing suit-wearing variant that can be played as.
Four of the five members of the Nitro Squad, being Ami, Liz, Isabella, and Megumi, were created for the original Crash Team Racing as non-playable characters, being motorsports models present at award ceremonies in the game, most commonly seen when a player gets a trophy. Because of this, they were colloquially referred to as the Trophy Girls,[citation needed] prior to the creation of the Nitro Squad, which was officially recognized by the creative director of Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled.[1] With Ami, Liz, Isabella, and Megumi appearing in Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled as playable characters unlockable during the Nitro Tour Grand Prix in-game event, the Nitro Squad group was created with the inclusion of Tawna Bandicoot, a character from the first Crash Bandicoot game similar in appearance to, and a likely inspiration for,[2] the previous four; owing to this, Tawna appears as the lead character in promotional images depicting the Nitro Squad.
In Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, the members of the Nitro Squad are stated to be from different parts of the world,[3] with Ami, Liz, Isabella, and Megumi being suggested to be from the United States of America, United Kingdom, Italy, and Japan respectively;[4] likely due to the namesakes of the former characters, and to tie with the theme of the Nitro Tour Grand Prix being based on internationality. Unlike the former characters, however, Tawna Bandicoot was created with the concept of originating from the Wumpa Islands, a fictional location, with Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled providing no suggestion of the contrary.
