Flashback Tapes are items that appear in Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time. If collected, they allow the player to complete short challenges set before the events of Crash Bandicoot and Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, where Crash and Coco are placed through various, rigorous "experiments" to test their abilities. Flashback Tapes are first found in The Hazardous Wastes and are obtainable in every level then on, with exceptions being timeline levels or boss fights. The background music in the tapes originate from the first two games.
In order to collect Flashback Tapes, Crash and Coco must make it to where they are located without dying beforehand; otherwise they will be made transparent and unable to be picked up. A total of twenty-one tapes, the first eleven playable as Crash and the last ten as Coco, can be found.
By completing all Flashback Tapes and obtaining Platinum Flashback Relics, Crash and Coco earn the General Rule skin.
