“Papu want in action, to lay boom down big!”
— Papu Papu, Crash Team Racing
Papu Papu is a recurring character in the Crash Bandicoot franchise, often appearing in an antagonistic role, though he does not work under Dr. Neo Cortex. Papu Papu is the leader of an unnamed tribe and prone to having a short temper as described in the manual for Crash Bandicoot.
History[edit]
Crash Bandicoot / Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy[edit]
Papu Papu debuts in the first Crash Bandicoot game as a boss. After Crash enters his hut, he finds Papu Papu sleeping on his throne. Papu Papu then wakes up and sees the bandicoot, prompting him to attack with his staff by crashing it down and spinning in place in an attempt to kill Crash. Papu Papu can only be defeated by jumping on his head three times (five times in the Japanese version and the N. Sane Trilogy). After the fight, Papu Papu will collapse in defeat, allowing Crash to use his stomach as a springboard to exit his hut.
Crash Team Racing / Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled[edit]
Papu Papu reappears as a boss and playable driver in Crash Team Racing and its remake, driving a yellow kart. He is unlocked via completion of the Green Gem Cup or via cheat code. Papu Papu is a Speed-type driver, with high top speed, but poor acceleration and turning.
In the Adventure mode, he is the holder of the Boss Key in The Lost Ruins area. His boss race takes place on his home track, Papu's Pyramid and will deposit green and red beakers on the track to slow down the player. If the player wins the race, Papu Papu will relinquish the Boss Key and allow the player to move to the next area.
In Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, Papu Papu stays the same statistically, but now has selectable skins much like all other playable characters. His only Legendary Skin, Pirate Papu Papu, was made available during the Spooky Grand Prix and purchasable in the Pit Stop.

Crash Twinsanity[edit]
Papu Papu once more leads his tribe in Totem Hokum, where he captures Dr. Neo Cortex and ties him to a totem pole, later attempting to capture Crash as well when he arrives to save Cortex. After Cortex is freed, Papu Papu sends his tribe to try and prevent Crash and Cortex from escaping.
Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time[edit]
While Papu Papu does not make a physical appearance, his namesake and likeness are referenced in the level Rush Hour through a holographic logo simply reading Papu's.
